Breaking Bread with William Saroyan is an authentic Armenian recipe book derived from the heritage of William Saroyan’s Bitlis, Armenia. More than 40 original watercolors by Pat Hunter illustrate the book with images of breads, fruits, vegetables and locales once familiar to and favored by Saroyan. The book features recipes reprinted from author and restaurateur George Mardikian’s 1942 book, Dinner at Omar Khayyam’s as well as recipes gleaned from the First Armenian Presbyterian church and other Armenian cookbooks. Friends and associates share their reminiscences of the award winning literary giant who was born in Fresno California and after reaping success in the literary and film world, returned to his birthplace to live out his final days. Words excerpted from William Saroyan’s writings describing his love for Armenian cuisine accompany the recipes and other commentary.
Breaking Bread with William Saroyan, an artistic and literary gem, is a one-of-a-kind collector book offering the opportunity to prepare and sample foods common to Saroyan and his people.
